Citing GenAI APA7

It is important to cite all resources that you use or refer to in your research, including artificial intelligence (AI) sources such as ChatGPT. For more information about this new and quickly evolving tool, read How to Cite ChatGPT from apastyle.apa.org.

Reference Example:

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

This example from APA is citing the "conversation" with ChatGPT.  Remember that the chatbot is getting information from other sources and is reformatting them to send to you.  ASK the chatbot where they are getting their information: "What are your sources and please give them to me in the APA7 format?"  Then double check the citations by following links to the original sources and cite those sources.

Use the Library's APA 7th Citation Guide to learn more about citing sources.

Sample Conversation with ChatGPT about Source and Citation Formatting

Please provide the source material you used in APA7 format.

Sure, here is the APA 7th citation for the link you provided:

Andersen, J. P., Degn, L., Fishberg, R., Graversen, E. K., Horbach, S. P. J. M., Kalpazidou Schmidt, E., Schneider, J. W., & Sørensen, M. P. (2024). Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the research process – a survey of researchers' practices and perceptions.  https://www.researchgate.net/publication/383956820_Generative_Artificial_Intelligence_GenAI_in_the_research_process_-_a_survey_of_researchers'_practices_and_perceptions

Why is there no hanging indent?

You're absolutely right! I apologize for the oversight. In APA 7th style, all reference list entries should have a hanging indent. This means that the first line of each entry is flush left, and subsequent lines are indented.

Here's the corrected citation with the hanging indent:

Andersen, J. P., Degn, L., Fishberg, R., Graversen, E. K., Horbach, S. P. J. M., Kalpazidou Schmidt, E., Schneider, J. W., & Sørensen, M. P. (2024). Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the research process – a survey of researchers' practices and perceptions.

To create a hanging indent in your document, you can use the formatting options in your word processor. Typically, you'll find this option under the "Paragraph" or "Format" menu.

I apologize again for the initial error. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

NOTE:  Computers have great difficulty creating the "hanging indent" online.  Even when the chatbot "says" they have corrected the issue, they haven't.  They have explained HOW to create the hanging indent but cannot provide an example.  Beware!
