Tips for Creating a Successful Prompt

  • Use everyday, conversational language to "talk" to the chatbot.
  • Plan your question in advance but also be ready to ask for more information or greater detail.
  • Provide information on the role you want the chatbot to play.  Reviewer? Mentor? Instructor? Specify the tone or style.
  • Be as detailed as possible. The best results are achieved with very specific instructions.

  • Ask for a specific type of response and format:

    • "Please create a table of instructions for a Bouillabaisse recipe for a beginning chef."

    • "I need study questions for my biology 100 test about cell growth and division."

    • "Write a Python function to calculate the factorial of a given number.”

  • ALWAYS ASK FOR SOURCES USED AND CITATIONS
    • "What is your source for this information?"
    • "Please respond with an APA7 citation for the sources you used."
  • You may not be able to retrieve the same results later, even with the same search. Copy and save any chatbot results you wish to keep.
